The Middle East and the New Global Economy: Development and Diversification in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia will join other Group of Twenty (G-20) nations this week to address the global economic recovery. In a discussion with the Middle East Youth Initiative, expert economist Hassan Hakimian explains that the government’s stimulus budget has helped to cushion the country from the worst effects of the recession. Yet, the long-term challenges of developing the non-oil, private sector and harnessing human capital remain.

Global Economic Crisis: Coping Mechanisms in Oil-Exporting Economies of the Middle East

Djavad Salehi-Isfahani recently spoke on-air to 6 News, a Turkey-based TV channel, about how oil-exporting economies in the Middle East will cope with the economic downturn. If oil prices remain low over the course of the next year, economies such as Iran and Iraq will face pressure to implement fiscal adjustments more quickly, while other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, may be able to compensate by drawing on large foreign reserves. An edited transcript of the interview follows.

Youth Ambassador Think Tank: Economic Life in the Middle East: A “High-Trust” or “Low-Trust” Environment?

MEYI’s Youth Ambassador Think Tank is a forum to encourage active discussion on topics of timely relevance to Middle Eastern youth. Our fourth topic draws on the context of the current global economic crisis and asks participants if economic life in their country takes place in a “high-trust” or “low-trust” setting, how they anticipate this setting might change in the future, and what the effects of these changes will mean for young people.

Slipping Oil Prices: Is the Oil Rich Middle East Prepared?

Djavad Salehi-Isfahani examines how declining oil prices will affect government spending and youth-targeted development in the region. Compared to the 1980’s oil price collapse, today’s policy-makers face a more complex set of challenges, including a volatile global economy and large numbers of unemployed youth.
