To mark the release of a joint report by the Middle East Youth Initiative and Silatech, as part of the Taqeem program, we have launched a three-part commentary series on the state of social entrepreneurship and social investment in the Middle East.

Samantha Constant, Associate Director of the Middle East Youth Initiative, participated in a private panel convened by the International Labor Affairs Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor on December 18 titled "Transforming the Youth Bulge into a Worker Bulge."

The League of Arab States (LAS) Population Policy and Migration Department has announced research awards for papers dealing with issues of youth and migration in preparation for the LAS Youth Forum, to be held in Asilah, Morocco in November 2009.

Research by the Middle East Youth Initiative was used to inform a recent feature on PBS's FRONTLINE/World program documenting the youth employment challenge in Egypt.

In its latest report, the Middle East Youth Initiative cautions that a new jobs crisis may damage future prospects for the region's young people. James D. Wolfensohn, former president of the World Bank and founder of the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings, says: “The Middle East is facing a new economic reality, and young people risk bearing the brunt of this downturn.”
